Located at the intersection of Highway 290 and Highway 77, The City of Giddings is named after the brave San Jacinto Battle veteran Giles Giddings, who gave his life to help Texas achieve its independence from Mexico. The early settlers in Giddings were largely pioneers who came in from nearby communities. Mainly of Anglo-Saxon heritage, but with a sprinkling of German and Wendish legacy, they stayed, built homes, and raised their families in this area. The strong family values and commitment to the community that they exemplified remain important to our citizens.
Giddings is the county seat for Lee County and has an estimated population of 6,000. The city is comprised of 5.1 square miles inside the city limits with an additional 1 square mile in the extraterritorial jurisdiction. The landscape is composed mainly of pastureland with lightly wooded areas.
Residents are enchanted with Giddings' hometown feel and close proximity to major metropolitan areas such as Houston, Austin, Bryan/College Station, and San Antonio. This combination allows citizens to have the best of both worlds and to live their lives at the pace they choose. Housing prices range from starter homes to over $500,000 with a multitude of choices in-between.
The Giddings Independent School District (GISD) serves residents by providing education for grades K-12; while many private and parochial schools offer educational alternatives.
A strong community commitment to education is evidenced by the construction of the new high school on Highway 77. Special features of the new high school include an upgraded technology wing, science wing, and art wing.
Higher education is readily available in close proximity to Giddings. Blinn College, ITT Technical Institute, Austin Community College, Texas A&M University, University of Texas, Concordia University, Sam Houston State University, Baylor College, and many other campuses are all within two hours from Giddings.
